Sustainable plumbing services

Sustainability

DL Good Plumbing, as part of the Goods family of businesses, is a locally owned New Zealand organisation with strong community roots and a long-standing commitment to environmental responsibility. As a significant employer across multiple industries, we recognise that sustainable business practices are essential to protecting the environment and ensuring the long-term wellbeing of the communities in which we operate.

Environmental stewardship is embedded in the culture of the Goods family. Our guiding principle is that every activity we undertake has an impact on the environment and the people around us. As a result, we actively pursue continuous improvement through responsible resource management, waste reduction, recycling initiatives, and environmentally responsible operational practices.

DL Good Plumbing operates under internationally recognised management systems and is ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), ISO 9001 (Quality Management), and ISO 45001 (Health and Safety Management) accredited. These certifications demonstrate our commitment to structured environmental management, continuous improvement, risk management, and responsible operational practices across all projects and services we deliver.

Environmental Restoration and Biodiversity

Over the past 25 years, the Goods family has undertaken a major environmental restoration initiative in Puhoi. More than 2,000 hectares of rugged land has been planted and regenerated, creating what is now known as the Puhoi Forest. This project has restored significant native habitat and supports the return of native flora and fauna to the region.

Through ongoing pest management and land stewardship, the project contributes to biodiversity protection, carbon sequestration, and the long-term ecological health of the area. The initiative also provides sustainable local employment opportunities, with staff employed above the living wage.

Waste Reduction and Circular Resource Use

DL Good Plumbing actively works with suppliers and partners to minimise waste and improve the sustainability of materials used in our operations.

We have implemented structured waste management practices across our business, including:

Dedicated recycling systems coordinated through a full-time storeperson responsible for managing deliveries, materials recovery, and waste separation.
A PVC recycling programme where pipe offcuts are collected and processed through supplier-supported chipping systems.
Reuse initiatives where recovered PVC material is returned to manufacturing partners for reprocessing into new products, supporting a circular supply chain and reducing landfill waste.
These initiatives significantly reduce construction waste while strengthening responsible supply chain practices.

Sustainable Plumbing Practices

Environmental performance is also reflected in the services we deliver. Our plumbing teams actively support water conservation and resource efficiency through the installation and maintenance of water-saving technologies in public, commercial, and infrastructure projects.

Wherever possible, materials used for testing, installation, and maintenance are reused or recycled. Our teams are trained and encouraged to adopt environmentally responsible practices across all projects.

Continuous Improvement

Through our ISO-certified management systems, supplier partnerships, and internal environmental initiatives, DL Good Plumbing is committed to continually improving our environmental performance.

We recognise that consistent, practical improvements across our operations can create meaningful environmental outcomes. Our goal is to ensure that the work we undertake contributes positively to the sustainability of New Zealand’s infrastructure, communities, and natural environment.

 Creating Sustainable Outcomes That Last

At DL Good, sustainability is more than an initiative it is a responsibility that shapes what we own, how we design, build, and support the environments in which people work and communities thrive.

In 2018, the Good family demonstrated this commitment by developing and owning a purpose-built, environmentally responsible facility in Auckland for Cookie Time. Rather than focusing solely on construction, the project was designed to deliver lasting environmental, operational, and commercial benefits for generations to come.

The facility incorporates 299 solar panels that generate renewable energy to support both power consumption and hot water production, significantly reducing reliance on traditional energy sources. A comprehensive rainwater harvesting system captures and reuses water throughout the manufacturing process, supporting Cookie Time's commitment to more sustainable food production while reducing demand on the municipal water supply.

These initiatives were not selected simply because they offered an attractive financial return. They were chosen because they represented the right long-term investment—for our client, for the environment, and for future generations. The result is a building with a substantially lower carbon footprint, reduced operating costs, improved resource efficiency, and resilience that will continue to deliver value for decades.

This project reflects DL Good's philosophy that we do not simply work within the built environment—we help create it. Every project presents an opportunity to challenge conventional thinking, improve environmental performance, and deliver innovative solutions that balance sustainability with commercial outcomes.

Today, that same commitment is embedded across our business. Whether designing new building services, upgrading existing assets, improving energy efficiency, reducing water consumption, or supporting clients on their decarbonisation journey, DL Good partners with organisations to create practical, measurable, and enduring sustainable outcomes.

We believe the best buildings are those that leave a positive legacy—not only for the people who use them today, but for the communities and environment that will depend on them tomorrow.
