Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, Building 5

Commercial hydraulic services for healthcare facility

Built to support healthcare innovation at scale

Fisher & Paykel Healthcare’s Building 5.1 in East Tāmaki was a major new manufacturing and office facility - built to support world-class production and the people who keep it running day to day. DLG delivered the full hydraulic package across the approximately 30,000m² site, designing and installing systems that were efficient, reliable, and fit for a large, spread-out footprint. From rainwater reuse and staff amenities to café and end-of-trip facilities, the services were planned with performance and practicality in mind - helping enable a facility that supports local jobs and the delivery of healthcare products used by people around the world.

Size & scope of project

This project involved the delivery of a new approximately 30,000m² manufacturing and office facility for Fisher & Paykel Healthcare. With a large footprint and a spread-out layout, the building required hydraulic systems that were carefully planned to perform reliably across multiple zones - supporting both precision manufacturing and modern workplace amenities at scale.

Services delivered

DLG delivered the full hydraulic package for the facility. This included end-of-trip amenities, rainwater storage tanks and the associated non-potable reticulation for WC flushing, and dedicated hot water systems to amenity areas. Services were also installed to café areas and tea-making facilities, ensuring staff facilities were fully supported across the building.

What made this project complex or high-risk?

DLG operated as a Design & Build subcontractor, working closely with the design team under our control to review and develop systems suited to the building’s dispersed nature and the client’s specific operational requirements. The scale of the facility, combined with the need for consistent performance across a wide plan, required a considered approach to system layout, capacity, and coordination.

Solutions & approach

Given the size of the building and the requirement for hot water services to be located close to staff amenities, DLG reviewed the hot water strategy and implemented a point-of-use approach. This reduced reliance on centralised hot water cylinder systems, improving responsiveness at amenities while reducing installation complexity and ongoing operating costs - without compromising performance or maintainability.

Project results

DLG’s involvement from the design phase through to delivery helped the programme run smoothly and reduced risk during construction by resolving key performance and layout decisions early. The completed hydraulic services supported a facility built for long-term operation - underpinning a major manufacturing site that contributed to skilled employment locally and helped enable Fisher & Paykel Healthcare to continue delivering products that support better health outcomes for people and families in New Zealand and around the world.
